Nelson Leafs move into tie for first place - Nelson Star

A five-game winning streak has the Nelson Leafs in a tie for first place atop the Neil Murdoch Division.

The Leafs edged the Border Bruins 2-1 in Grand Forks on Friday before blowing out the Rebels 7-3 in Castlegar on Saturday.

The victories moved Nelson to 7-3-1 with a game in hand on the Beaver Valley Nitehawks, who also have 15 points at the top of the division.

Rhett Hamilton scored in the final minute of regulation to lift the Leafs passed the Border Bruins, who are now a league-worst winless through nine games.

Lane Goodwin also scored for Nelson, while Dylan Marshall made 19 saves.

Justin Dueck was forced to stop 52 shots for Grand Forks, with Brydon Bell scoring the team’s lone goal.

The next night in Castlegar, Nelson scored five goals in the third period en route to the rout.

Bennett Anklewich and Goodwin each had two goals, while Simon Nemethy, Bryce Sookro and Hamilton added singles. Marshall also stopped 27 shots for the win.

Justin Duguay, Griffen Ryden and Nathan Dan replied for Castlegar (2-7-1). Rebels goaltender Matteo Hueston was pulled after allowing five goals on 31 shots. Ryder Graham took over and gave up two more goals on nine shots.

Nelson returns to Castlegar on Wednesday before hosting Grand Forks on Saturday.
