Lancers Open French Broad Invite in Eighth Place
Women's Golf /
ARDEN, N.C. – Day one of the French Broad College Invitational continued a familiar trend for Longwood women's golf, with sophomore Emma Landis leading the Lancers once again in a tie for 16th place and sophomore Annabelle Jennings continuing her late-fall surge by climbing into the top 25 at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.
In the opening round of their final tournament of the fall, Landis and Jennings' top-25 performances lifted Longwood into eighth place in the 13-team field on the par-71, 5,937-yard course. The Lancers tied for the first-round team lead with 47 pars and came in ahead of fellow Big South competitors USC Upstate and Radford in the team standings.
Landis carded a five-over 76 while Jennings followed one stroke behind with a 77 and both freshman Ester Choi and senior Diana Domenech both came in with eight-over 79s to tie for 34th. Those four made Longwood one of only five teams in the 13-team field to have at least four players with sub-80 opening rounds.
With two days left in the three-day, 54-hole tournament, Longwood trails Lipscomb by one stroke for seventh place, Big South rival UNC Asheville by eight for a spot in the top five, and another Big South rival, High Point, by 10 spots for a place in the top three.
Round two of the three-round tournament will begin for Longwood at 10 a.m. Tuesday with senior Grace Huffman teeing off from the first hole. Domenech will begin her threesome at 10:09 a.m., followed by Choi at 10:18 a.m., Jennings at 10:27 a.m. and Landis at 10:36 a.m.
