Trudy’s Place, which has been a staple in Limerick Township for many decades, has new owners and management. New owner Kubinda Sahote and family, reopened the store under new management on Sept. 10. Manager Maurice Stamp and assistant manager Cheyenne Wells explain how this new iteration of Trudy’s will be different and be more successful than ever, with a grand reopening event tentatively scheduled for the spring of 2022.
Trudy’s Place, a landmark store in Limerick Township reopened under new management on Sept. 10. Stamp, the store’s new manager, says that from what Sahote told him, Trudy’s is a hot spot, and that’s why the family wanted to buy it.
“Trudy’s has been a landmark place [in Limerick Township] for years. That’s what was most appealing to them. It has a lot of potential,” he says.
Stamp says that with any form of organization there are going to be challenges, but as he and his team have gone along, they’re learning and striving to do better each day.
“So far, it’s been fairly easy for us. Cheyenne is a local and I’ve been in retail all my life. So, I know how to be with customers and the community has really accepted us because they needed a change,” he says.
Long time Limerick Township resident Basil Park reveals that Trudy’s Place started up back in the late 1930s or early 1940s, when it was known as Mawson’s store, owned by Dave Mawson. According to Catherine M. Vallieres’ book Limerick Area History Bits, Mawson was also reeve of Limerick Township twice, from 1936 to 1940 and again from 1943 to 1948. Trudy’s went through multiple owners over the years, including Trudy Heersink, the store’s namesake, who bought it in 1976. It was purchased by its current owner, Sahote, a couple of months ago from Estelle and Joseph Kim.
As for changes planned for Trudy’s over the coming months, Wells says one of them is going to be happening next spring.
“We’re going to be getting new gas pumps and tanks and a new overhang, so it’ll be nice. It’s coming,” she says.
Stamp highlights some of the other changes that customers can expect. They intend to expand the building and useable business area, doubling it in size to the north. He says they’re bringing back the bakery, including the famous Chelsea buns and butter tarts, and they’ll also have a restaurant that will serve fare like pizza and chicken wings.
“We’re going to have an outdoor patio and eating area and a motel on the second floor for our customers to stay,” he says.
Stamp says he’s very competitive and likes to win, and says that he and his team are going to make Trudy’s what it’s supposed to be; a big success.
“They’re going to love us. So, we’re going to be better than whomever, because yes, it’s a business, but we’re here also to please our customers,” he says. “I live here now [in Limerick Township] and I want to make the best of this opportunity.”
