Around 30 people gathered at the RCMP building in downtown Prince George in a last-minute rally to call on police to stand down against the Fairy Creek land defenders.

Drumming, vehicles honking their horn, and people giving speeches could be heard in the downtown sector as Conservation North held up signs.

Michelle Connolly, one of the organizers of the event, said it’s our job to protect these forests.

“We’ve organized this event to bring attention to not only the police brutality against Indigenous and non-Indigenous land defenders in Fairy Creek but to draw attention to the fact that the only reason we have these forests here is because Indigenous people protected them for thousands of years.”

“We want to protect the way of life we have up here in the north. So many of us hunt, so many of us fish and forage, and those are the values we are trying to protect with our work. We believe in these kinds of traditional land-based values that so many northerners have,” added Connolly.

She also noted that the rally was put together on short notice, so she hopes more people show up for the rally at Mr.PG at 4 pm.

9:00 am:

A flash rally is being held today to tell the RCMP to stand down against the Fairy Creek land defenders trying to stop the clear-cutting of old-growth.

The rally starts at noon at the RCMP building on 455 Victoria Street, and another rally will be held at 4 pm at Mr.PG.

People are being encouraged to wear orange and to wear a mask.

On the Conservation North website is a statement calling for legal protection for the old-growth forests and a better transition for forestry in previously logged areas.

“Your “new” approach to forestry is insufficient. We do not see the paradigm shift we were promised. Your actions towards reconciliation have not been in good faith. We will not stand down until all old-growth is protected.”

“It is time to act. BC’s primary and old-growth forests, including northern BC’s globally unique inland temperate and boreal rainforests, are disappearing. While governments at the provincial and municipal levels talk, commission reports, and talk some more, industrial-scale logging continues apace,” added Conservation North.
