Annual 9/11 Memorial Workout takes place today - CochraneNow.com

The tragedy of the day the Twin Towers fell is most certainly a flashbulb memory for many.

Anyone that was of the age to understand what was happening on that fateful day knows exactly where they were and what they were doing on September 11, 2001.

Chris Chyka with Cochrane Fire Services says, “When I looked the other day and realized it was 20 years. I know we all say time flies, but I think most people remember where they were. So, the fact that it is 20 years later already. Certainly, a lot of us in fire service have those memories.”

This Saturday marks the 20th Anniversary of the day that changed the world.

In commemoration of the day, the 6th Annual 9/11 Memorial Workout will take place at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre today (Friday, September 10).

The 2,977 people who were killed and the 412 Emergency Responders that perished that day continue to be remembered and honoured despite the passage of 20 years. While the memory does not fade, Chyka says, “The point of the workout is to remember is to not forget. We have the privilege and I’ll call it a privilege to do a workout like that on that anniversary. We are doing it on the 10th this year since the 11th is on Saturday but we have the privilege we are still here so we will honour and remember them while sweating a little bit on their behave is certainly an honour to us.”

The 9/11 Tribute Memorial Workout has become an annual tradition that recognizes the lives that were lost to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City. Chyka believes that it is a memory that will stay with many, but he is concerned that, “We are losing a lot of those people. Whether it is due to the carcinogens that a lot of the firefighters in New York City captured on the scene, whether it is the fact that we are getting older. I think it will be a strong memory for the rest of many people’s lives. My concern is the younger generation don’t have the powerful impact that September 11th is.”

The 9/11 Workout sees first responder’s and community members work out with one exercise for each of the fallen. Typically, firefighters perform the exercises in their gear.

There will be two sessions today (Friday, September 10) one at 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. at the Turf Arena at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

The event will begin with a bag-pipe tribute at 9:15.
