The Rec Room: Barrie's new place to play – Barrie 360 - Barrie 360

In the 60s and 70s, the rec room was the place to go in the house to be entertained. The TV was there, a record player, maybe a pool table or a tabletop hockey game.

Kash Ahmad, Executive Director, Amusement and Attractions for Cineplex, said they took all of that into consideration when designing The Rec Room at Park Place, “That is exactly it. It is a place of entertainment. A premium experience, eats, and entertainment under one roof. And it’s really an extension of your rec room.”

There are 100 arcade video games to play, a four-lane bowling alley, pool tables, ping pong tables, virtual reality, a stage for bands and stand-up comedy, and food, “when you go into our 310 dining area, you have a huge selection of shareables, instagrammable food options. And then, as you venture through the facility, we have our shared area where you can grab some shareables and some savoury snacks and handhelds, and you can go onto the game floor with it as well,” said Ahmad

The arcade games are played using an RFID wristband. You load it up with credits, and it stores your information forever. You play games, you can register it in case you lose it, and it keeps your credits and your points until you want to redeem something, “there’s a lot of items to choose from, anything from candy to board games to purses and gaming consoles, and iPads and things like that.”

The Rec Room has a capacity for 660 people but will be operating at 50 per cent capacity under COVID protocols. Normal hours will be 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. But for, now, it won’t be opening until 4 p.m. each day.
