The Bearcat men were first out of five teams at the Rhode Island Invitational while the women were third out of seven squads. In addition, Binghamton set three school records and two freshman records during the three-day meet, which concluded on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Liam Murphy was the Bearcats' top performer of the weekend, capturing three events in the men's meet and swimming on a pair of first-place relays that set school records. He won the 1650 free (15:56.75), the 500 free (4:29.33) and the 200 free (1:40.24) and was on the 400 free relay (3:00.94) and the 800 free relay (6:41.21).
Also swimming on the 800 free relay team were fellow sophomores Jake Vecchio and Henry Shemet as well as freshman Elijah Lanfear. Together, they took down the previous school record of 6:43.07, which was set back in 2010.
Shemet, Lanfear and junior Justin Meyn were the other members of the 400 free relay team. They eclipsed the previous school record of 3:01.18, that was set back in 2007.
Binghamton's third and final school record set during the weekend was turned in by senior Ryan Board in the 100 breaststroke. His time of 54.59 broke his own school record of 54.70, which was set at the America East Championships back in April.
Double winners on the men's side included Shemet in the 400 IM (3:58.74) and the 200 IM (1:49.77), sophomore Jake Vecchio in the 100 back (50.57) and 200 fly (1:49.44) as well as senior Christopher Egan in both the one- and three-meter diving events (with scores of 302.65 and 280.75 respectively). Egan's one-meter score met the standard for the NCAA Zone Meet (300.00) – something he has now done three times this season.
Sophomore Courtney Moane led the women's team with victories in the 100 breast (1:05.24) and the 200 breast (2:21.67). She also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team that included fellow sophomores Maddie Hoover and Lara Geelen as well as senior Belen Marriaga and clocked a time of 1:46.44).
Other winners on the men's side included Lanfear in the 100 fly (49.67), Meyn in the 100 free (45.53), freshman Keegan Chatham in the 200 back (1:48.74) and sophomore Xiaoyu Lin in the 200 breast (2:00.64). In the process, Chatham broke the Binghamton freshman record of 1:49.70, set by Zachary Kaplan in 2016.
Chatham, Lanfear, Board and junior Ryan Maierle captured the men's 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.25.
The Bearcats other individual winner in the women's meet was sophomore Mel Carousso, who was first in the 1650 free (17:16.30).
Senior Amanda McGraw was second in both the one and three-meter diving events. Her scores were 280.60 and 250.25 respectively.
Freshman Lauren Kuzma set the Binghamton women's rookie record in the 200 breast. She placed second in that event behind Moane with a time of 2:22.00. Her preliminary time of 2:19.46, however, broke the 2:20.44 mark set by Corinne Zotter.
Binghamton's next scheduled meet is set for Jan. 22 at St. Bonaventure.
