The city councillor who chairs St. John’s Sports and Entertainment is responding to speculation about the future plans of Deacon Sports and Entertainment.
Yesterday it was announced that a lease agreement was signed between the two groups, keeping the Newfoundland Growlers at Mile One for at least the next three years.
Shortly after that news broke, Deacon Sports and Entertainment issued a release stating they will hold a media availability in the next few weeks to talk about their long-term commitments and future investments in sports teams and facilities in the region.
Speculation is swirling that owner Dean MacDonald may be planning to either build his own facility or move to another one in the region. Further fueling the speculation were tweets from MacDonald yesterday indicating that the Edge “aren’t done yet” and that big investments are being planned in both teams.
When asked about the press release from Macdonald’s company, Councillor Jamie Korab noted that he hadn’t seen it yet, but did comment on the speculation.
At the end of the day, he says he wants things to be in the city. But, if there’s another sports team, like basketball, operating out of another city or town then that will be good for the region and thus good for St. John’s.
Lease for New Basketball Team at Mile One Soon to Be Finalized
Meanwhile, Korab has provided an update on the new basketball team coming to Mile One in place of the Edge.
It was announced last month that a tentative deal had been reached to bring a new team, this time with the American Basketball Association, to the facility.
At the time, it was said that more information would be released in the coming weeks. However, new information has yet to be made public.
According to Korab, they are still working with the group, 2001 Investments, on that deal.
He says the lease will “likely” be finalized this week, and will be signed within the next week. At that time, an announcement will be made.
