The Vancouver Canucks have placed winger Jake Virtanen on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout, the team announced Sunday.
The team placed Virtanen on leave in May and commissioned a private investigation following allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Virtanen faces a civil suit in Kelowna, B.C., where he has denied the allegations in motions filed on his behalf, and is being investigated in parallel by the Vancouver Police Department.
Virtanen, who turns 25 in August, had one year remaining on a two-year, $5.1 million contract. Because of his age, he is subject to a one-third buyout. The team will owe $50,000 on the salary cap in 2021-22 and $500,000 in 2022-23, according to Cap Friendly.
A first-round pick (No. 6) by Vancouver in 2014, Virtanen has spent six seasons in the NHL with the Canucks, posting 100 points in 317 games.
