Event organizers announced Friday that if all goes well, the popular two-day rugby sevens event will return Sept. 18-19, 18 months after they were the last large sports event to take place in Canada.

Additionally, Canada is planning to host a second tournament a week later, to be held at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, as a replacement for the London (England) Sevens, which has been cancelled for 2021.

“Ongoing work continues with governments, stakeholders and partners to ensure both events meet any relevant COVID requirements in order to maintain the safety of participants and attendees,” Rugby Canada said in a news release.

“Tournament logistics, including team invitations and stadium capacity, are being finalized and further information will be made available prior to public tickets going on sale, which is currently scheduled for early August. British Columbia is in Step 3 of their provincial restart plan, and Step 4 is scheduled to start Sept. 7 prior to the event. It is anticipated that capacity at B.C. Place will be limited and, based on past years’ attendances, fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets early when they are made available.”

It’s expected that capacity at open-air Commonwealth Stadium will be around 31,000 fans per day. Tickets for the Edmonton event go on sale July 22.

“B.C. rugby fans everywhere have been waiting to cheer on our Canadian players since they last played at B.C. Place in March. We are thrilled to welcome the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series back to B.C.,” said Melanie Mark, minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

“It is so exciting to be able to safely return to hosting large sporting events again — for the players, the workers and the fans. This is an important part of our province’s economic recovery and I can’t wait to see our national sevens’ team in action.”
