Police in Kingston, Ont., are asking residents in the Rideau Heights area to stay in place as officers search for a male who is believed to have discharged a firearm.
Police are considering the man armed and dangerous.
Officers were dispatched to the area near Montreal Street and Highway 401 at approximately 8:45 a.m. Saturday due to a suspected altercation involving the use of a pistol.
A man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but those injuries don't seem to be gunshot-related.
"We don't believe this to be an active shooter in terms of the individual indiscriminately attempting to harm members of the public," Sgt. Steven Koopman told CBC News.
"We believe that the injured party or the victim in this case was targeted by the suspect that we're continuing to search for."
While an investigation is ongoing, Koopman said it's believed a collision occurred between one or two vehicles.
"There may have been one or more vehicles ... where contact would have been made," Koopman said. "There obviously was continuing or ongoing issues and interactions between those parties where the individual was injured and that a firearm was discharged as well."
Lock doors and windows, police advise
The man police are searching for is described as being in his 20s, Caucasian, wearing a white shirt and blue-coloured pants.
Kingston police have blocked off much of the area, using canine units to help search for the man.
According to a news release, the man may have fled down Virginia or Compton streets.
People are asked to avoid the area, with residents asked to lock their doors and windows.
"Since this individual may technically be fleeing from police or may have initially been in a vehicle then they may be trying to hide or find an ability to flee or not be found by police," Koopman said.
"We would ask people to, you know, lock their residences just to make sure that an individual is given no opportunity or chance to to get inside your residence."
Those with information about the man's whereabouts are asked to call 911 and not to approach him.
