The third meet of the 2021 Diamond League calendar took place in Florence, Italy, on Thursday, and a number of athletes ran to big results. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men’s 5,000m in a European record of 12:48.45. In the same race, Canada’s Moh Ahmed and Justyn Knight ran to third- and fifth-place finishes in 12:50.12 and 12:51.93, respectively. Gabriela DeBues-Stafford ran a season best in the 1,500m, posting a fourth-place result in 4:00.46.

Ingebrigtsen’s big win
Ingebrigtsen entered Thursday’s race with a 5,000m PB of 13:02.03, a time that he absolutely shattered. His 12:48.45 result is the new European record (beating the previous mark of 12:49.71) and the world-leading time for 2021. So far this year he has raced five times, posting three PBs and two European records.

After his fifth-place finish in the 5,000m at the 2019 world championships, Ingebrigtsen was already considered a threat to podium in Tokyo this summer, but it now looks even more likely that he could win his first Olympic medal. Second place went to Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet in a season best of 12:49.02, and Ahmed finished in third in 12:50.12, also a season best.

Fourth-place Mohamed Katir ran a Spanish national record of 12:50.79, and Knight finished just behind him in 12:51.93. This is an enormous PB for Knight, who entered the race in Florence (which was his first 5,000m of the season) with a personal best of 13:09.76. He was already the second-fastest runner in national history behind Ahmed (who owns the Canadian record of 12:47.20), and with his run, Knight became just the second Canadian to break 13 minutes.
Ahmed and Knight had both already run Olympic standard in the 5,000m. Ahmed also has standard in the 10,000m and Knight has qualified in the 1,500m (both are the only Canadians to have hit standard in those events).
If everything already mentioned wasn’t already exciting enough, Ahmed and Knight both beat Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, who finished in sixth in 12:54.69. Cheptegei is the world record holder in the 5,000m and the overwhelming favourite to win gold in Tokyo. The run is Cheptegei’s first loss over 5,000m in almost two years, with the last race he didn’t win coming in July 2019 at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he finished in fourth.

Hassan wins the 1,500m
DeBues-Stafford crossed the line a few places behind Sifan Hassan, who won the 1,500m race in a world-leading time and meet record of 3:53.63. Her result comes just days after her 10,000m world record of 29:06.82 (which was beaten by Letesenbet Gidey two days later when she ran 29:01.04 on the same track in Hengelo, the Netherlands).

Second place went to Faith Kipyegon in 3:53.91, which is a PB and Kenyan national record. Great Britain’s Laura Muir took the last spot on the podium with a season best of 3:55.59. Seventh-place Elise Vanderelst also had a big run, and while she didn’t place on the podium, she did run a Belgian record of 4:02.63.

Other results
The 5,000m was without a doubt the race of the day, but several runners in other events posted big results. Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the reigning 200m world champ, ran 22.06 seconds in the women’s 200m in Florence, setting a meet record. In the men’s 110m hurdles, the reigning Olympic gold medallist in the event, Omar McLeod, ran a world-leading time of 13.01 seconds, matching the meet record.

The women’s 100m hurdles saw Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn run 12.38 for the win and another meet record. In the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco won with a world-leading 8:08.54. El Bakkali owns two world championship medals in the 3,000m steeple, with a silver from 2017 and bronze from 2019. Canada’s Jean-Simon Desgagnés ran the steeplechase as well, finishing in 8:39.47. Finally, Dutch hurdler Femke Bol broke her own national record in the 400mH, taking the win in 53.44 seconds.
